“I don’t want to bulk”
One of the most common phrases we hear when we suggest increasing protein consumption to our female clientele. Ladies, this one is for you! Protein is one of the most important aspects of your nutritional health and most of us are not getting enough. So what is protein and why is it so important?
Protein is one of the three major macronutrients (carbs, fats, and protein) that together comprise a well balanced diet. Proteins are made of amino acids that help us stay healthy and we don’t create any amino acids in our bodies so we must consume proteins to keep those levels up.
Fuel for your body:
Protein provides your body with the fuel it needs to keep energy levels high. It enhances your brain’s ability to learn, reduces cholesterol, and strengthens your bones, skin, and nails.
Build Muscle:
Protein will not cause you to bulk because it promotes lean muscle mass. “Toning” is actually just building lean muscle, so if you’re looking to focus on a certain area; protein along with lifting weights is your first step. Protein also aids in the reduction of muscle breakdown and encourages muscular repair.
Transportation of hormones:
Not only does protein help our bodies stay strong and energized but transport proteins carry hormones all over our bodies. Transport proteins will move hormones from one location to another, like your body’s own little monorail system!
The recommended daily amount of protein someone should be aiming to consume is approximately 1 gram per kilo of body weight. This may vary depending on your activity levels, energy levels, and stage of life. If you’re still on the fence about eating more protein remember that protein aids in the prevention of bone loss as you age and promotes stronger bones!
