Hey mamas! You know that forever old statement you hear on airplanes- “Put your oxygen mask on first, before helping others” and how counterintuitive it can feel as a mom to contemplate this idea? In just about every circumstance, moms put the needs of others above their own. It’s easy to see how we end up sleep deprived, under nourished, or dehydrated while the rest of our family is well cared for. To be a mom sometimes literally means being selfless. So when someone tells us that we should be exercising while also trying to keep our kids alive it can seem impossible to do. How are we supposed to exercise along with everything else we are doing and why should we prioritize it?
At Bliss Fit we are here to tell you that exercising and taking care of yourself is one of the best things you can do not only for yourself, but also for your family. Still not convinced? Here are five reasons why exercise is important for moms.
Kids do a great job of raising our heart rate without exercise but adding in regular exercise will drastically relieve your stress levels. Stepping away from daily responsibilities to focus on yourself can be a great break from your family (we know you love them but it’s ok to take a break), release some endorphins, and come back feeling refreshed and ready to take on the next challenge.
Sleep is hard enough as a mom, but if you’re exercising regularly you should have a litter easier time falling asleep each night. We can’t promise that one of your kids will let you stay asleep but you will sleep sounder and get deeper rest after a good workout than you would have otherwise.
There is no energy level equal to that of a wound up child, but exercise will help you have the stamina to keep chasing after your kids a little longer. If nothing else it will give you the lung capacity to run after your one child that always seems to have lightning in their shoes. Exercise increases your energy levels and helps you stay tuned into how your body is feeling.
Exercise has been proven to help boost your immune system. We all know that kids bring germs wherever they go and usually when they get sick, Moms will follow with whatever the kids had. Adding regular exercise into your life can help boost your immune system and prepare your body to fight off whatever illnesses may be going around school that week.
Whether we realize or not, we are always being watched by little eyes. Even if we say nothing about exercise, the simple act of taking care of ourselves is observed by our kids and absorbed. Showing them how wonderful it feels to take care of our bodies and love ourselves is a great reason to exercise.
No matter how backwards it feels as a mom to lay aside our to do list in favor of a workout, it is the right thing for our whole family. Putting your oxygen mask on first allows you to have the physical capabilities to care for others. If you don’t take care of yourself, who will take care of your people?
