If you’re anything like me, you’ll go to make coffee in the morning but realize you forgot to run the dishwasher the night before. On your way to start the dishwasher, you’ll see yesterday’s laundry still waiting for you, and as you start folding you realize you need to make breakfast. All of a sudden you’ve run out of time and need to rush out the door to work or carpool but not before you remember to make sure everyone is buckled, lunches are packed, and you know where your keys are. Ladies, our brains are BUSY. It’s a miracle we get it all done. Trying to take care of a household, work, keep kids alive (if you have them), and take care of yourself can feel like an insurmountable task some days. So on top of everything else going on in our busy lives, how do you fit in exercise?
Exercise should be at the top of your to-do list. Laundry can wait (let’s be honest it’s probably already been waiting anyways so what’s a little longer?). Taking care of yourself with a regular exercise regimen will have positive impacts on all aspects of your life. Prioritize yourself and make your workouts non-negotiable.
Every person has a time of day when they are at their peak productivity. Identify if you are a morning, afternoon, or evening person and add your workouts into your best time of day. Chronotype studies can be found online and offer great insight into optimizing your sleep or daily schedule. Once you know your peak time, focus on fitting your workouts into that time frame.
If you really hate running, don’t run. If you really love gardening, go garden! Find out what kinds of exercise bring you the most enjoyment and focus on those. If your workouts are something you look forward to because it’s something you love doing, then you’re more likely to stick with it.
Everything’s better with a buddy. Grab your spouse or your bestie and get them involved in your workouts. If you can accomplish two things at the same time (social interaction and exercise) you might be able to fit more into your schedule than you think! Instead of just grabbing coffee with a friend, ask if they’d like to take coffee on the go for a walk and talk. Maybe you can sneak in an early evening bike ride with your kids before bedtime? Or just a good old backyard soccer game to get some exercise and family time.
Goals need to be precise and attainable in order for us to stick with them. Set a goal that you know will push you, but also isn’t impossible. Once you know what you’re working towards, set a plan for how you’ll actually get it done. Outline your timeframe and determine a method for holding yourself accountable.
Ladies, drop the laundry basket and go grab your workout buddy. It’s time to put ourselves ahead of feeding the cat. When we have cared for ourselves we will be better prepared to care for those we love, do our jobs well, and feel good!
