Nothing tells us to drink more water than the scorching hot temperatures of summer and super sweaty workouts. As the temperatures cool down with fall and winter, hydration can be harder to keep up with. It’s very common to feel less thirsty when it’s cooler out, but dehydration happens all year round. Whether it’s summer or winter, staying hydrated takes an active effort and we are here to help.
Hydration is important because without enough water, your body does not function properly. Your body depends on water to survive. Water helps your joints stay lubricated, your organs working properly, your body temperature regulated, your brain functioning normally, energy levels elevated, and so much more. All systems are at their optimal performance when you’re hydrated and even just a slight percentage of dehydration can drastically affect your entire body. It takes an active effort to stay on top of your hydration, and we have four ways to make this a little bit easier.
There is a set amount of water your body needs to consume on a daily basis. Once you meet your base level amount you’ll need to take into account all the additional factors that may change your hydration variable each day. Factors might include workouts, time of year, or whatever else is going on in your life and body. You will likely need to add to your hydration goals based on those additional factors, so make sure you are! Setting a water goal for your day could be as simple as “I want to refill my water bottle three times today” or as complex as “by 3pm I want to have consumed 60 ounces of water.” Whatever your goals are, set them realistically and do your best to achieve them.
A cute water bottle, a favorite cup, or even a bottle with times of the day on it to remind you how much you need to drink can have more influence on your hydration than you’d realize. Keep water with you when you’re on the go, especially during carpool.
After especially sweaty workouts or on a day when you’re behind on your hydration, an electrolyte replacement can make a big difference. Look for ones with low sugar and a high concentration of sodium. Nuun tablets, Liquid IV, or LMNT are our favorite brands.
Best way to stay hydrated is to keep the water flowing and food or drink that can lead to dehydration to a minimum. It’s always fun to enjoy a treat or a great glass of wine, but remember some foods and drinks that will accelerate dehydration. It’s best to plan your workouts and hydration schedule when you know you’d like to indulge in something out of the ordinary. Small adjustments can mean we get to indulge and stay on track.
